Bigmate Racing’s Todd Hazelwood is set to make his Virgin Australia Supercars Championship debut at the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint this weekend.
Matt Stone Racing have entered the 21-year-old as a ‘Wildcard’ entry into the championship round at Queensland Raceway, in what was recently introduced to the Supercars season.
Hazelwood comes off the bat from a successful Dunlop Super2 Series round at Townsville taking the round win and the series lead, adding that this weekend will be another dream come true.
“I’m super excited to be making my Supercars Championship debut this weekend—it is the dream come true for me. It has taken 14 years of racing and hard work to achieve this moment and just cannot wait to get out there for practice one with the rest of the field,” Hazelwood said.
“It is going to be a huge week for me, not only do I have so much to learn and absorb with the new super soft compound tyre and running the ‘twin spring’ configuration for the first time, but also contain the pressure and excitement when this dream of mine becomes a reality.
“There has been a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes preparing for this event. The team at Matt Stone Racing have gone above and beyond ensuring we present well and give ourselves the best possible chance to succeed. Hopefully there will be rewarded with some success at the end of the weekend.
“I’m feeling really good heading into this weekend. I’m fresh from two race wins in Townsville and had a great test day just last Friday. It’s going to be a huge challenge, I have no idea how I will go against the remainder of the field, but cannot wait to have a go and see what I can do.
“A huge thank you must go to the team at Matt Stone Racing, all my amazing team partners at Bigmate Racing and my Mum, Dad and Sister for making this moment possible.”
The team hosted a test day at Queensland Raceway last Friday, testing the Bigmate Holden Commodore with Supercars Championship car regulations.
Hazelwood’s Engineer, Wes McDougall, is relishing at the opportunity to work with Todd in the Supercars Championship.
“I, along with the rest of the crew, are really looking forward to helping Todd make his ‘main game’ debut this weekend at Queensland Raceway,” McDougall said.
“We had a strong and promising test day last week, so it will be interesting to see where we stand in the pecking order when Practice rolls around on Friday.”
I am under no illusions as to the fantastic challenge that lies ahead, with us being a Wildcard and playing in the top level of Australian motor sport … however, I seriously believe that we can ‘put the cat amongst the pigeons’, so to speak, and highlight Todd’s talent to the rest of the Supercars world. We are not there to simply make up the numbers, we are there to give it a red hot go.”
Bigmate Racing will be on track Friday for the opening practice session for the event, with all sessions live on Fox 506 across 28-30 July.
