Fatigue management has become one of the most talked about topics in the transport industry.
The subject is complex and while the penalties imposed by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) can seem harsh, fatigue management and regulation is a necessary evil to ensure everybody is using the road network with the highest regard for human safety. The rules must also be measurable so that those found flaunting them can be dealt with accordingly.
Before February 2014 it had been solely the responsibility of the driver to manage their driving hours. But with the introduction of Chain of Responsibility (CoR) the task of managing driver hours and preventing driver fatigue became the responsiblity of all parties in the supply chain.
Managing operations tasks in most modern transport companies is already an intense job with many stress points. Now with CoR, operators must ensure that, for every trip a driver is sent on, the driver is legally able to do the trip as planned without exceeding the many different rule sets that make up fatigue management regulation. This is further complicated by the fact that the rule sets differ for the three different driver fatigue certifications - Basic Fatigue Management (BFM), Standard and Advanced Fatigue Management (AFM).
To make all this easier for our customers, BIGmate has partnered with Transmate to deliver an in-depth fatigue management and compliance software solution called Compliancemate.
Compliancemate fulfils the tasks of recording and reporting all the necessary fatigue management (as well as mass and maintenance management) criteria required by the NHVR for companies certified under the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS).
An extension to Compliancemate is an in-vehicle tablet which enables the driver to log and record all required trip information quickly and easily, including their Safe Driving Plan Declaration.
Above: Compulsory Safe Driving Plan Declaration screen - the driver must press I Agree before they can login and start a trip.
The driver can also view their trip plan with required work versus rest periods, complete axle mass declarations and vehicle/trailer pre-trip checks, log vehicle faults and check when the next scheduled services are due.

Information such as Time Until Next Scheduled Break or Time Until Next Breach is invaluable for a driver as they no longer need to calculate anything, the tablet is checking every rule as they are driving to ensure they remain compliant.
When a driver is going to breach any rule which will require a non-conformance record to be created, they are warned 30 minutes before, again at 15, 10 and 5 minutes then every minute until they are in breach.

Compliancemate is an in-depth fatigue management solution developed to reduce the burden of work that comes with remaining compliant.
